![]() ![]() ![]() While the protagonist of Oranges follows the conventions of this genre in her struggle against the oppression of religion and of the asphyxiating society where she lives, the double voice of the narration, consisting of an adult narrator -suggestively named Jeanette- who retrospectively examines her past blending ‘real’ experiences with story-telling, and a young Jeanette who focalises the events in the present, problematises questions related to autobiography and the reinvention of the self. The novel has frequently been classified as a Bildungsroman and has been interpreted as autobiographical. Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) traces the development of a young girl in her process to come to terms with her own identity as a woman who finds love with other women. ![]()
